Did Your Insurer Write Off Your Car? Scrap Car Removal Options for Ajax and Toronto Owners

When an insurance adjuster calls a car a “total loss,” most Ajax and Toronto owners have the same questions: Who keeps the car now? What does the brand on the ownership mean? And if the wreck ends up back with you, what do you do with it? This guide walks through how write-offs work in Ontario, when the damaged car stays your responsibility, and how scrap car removal Ajax pickup works when repairing it no longer makes sense.

Canadian Auto Wreckers is based in Toronto, Ontario, Canada, and has been buying scrap, junk, and unwanted vehicles since 1981. We pick up across Toronto and the east GTA, including Ajax, Pickering, Whitby, Scarborough, Oshawa, Clarington, Peterborough, and Kawartha Lakes.

Key takeaways

  • A car is usually written off when the repair cost plus its salvage value comes close to, or passes, what the car was worth before the damage.
  • In Ontario, a written-off car is normally branded “Salvage” or “Irreparable” on its vehicle record. An Irreparable car can never be registered for the road again.
  • If you accept the payout and the insurer takes the car, you usually sign it over and do not need to scrap it yourself.
  • If you keep the car, or your policy did not cover the damage, the wreck is yours to repair, sell, or scrap.
  • A damaged car sitting at a tow or storage yard can keep adding storage fees, so decide quickly and ask what is owed before pickup.

What does it mean when your car is written off?

A write-off (or “total loss”) means the insurer has decided it is not worth repairing the car. Each company uses its own formula, but it generally compares the cost of repairs, plus what the damaged car could be sold for, against the car’s actual cash value before the accident, fire, flood, or theft. Older cars are written off more easily because their value is lower, so even a moderate collision can push repair costs past the line.

If you are still deciding whether to claim at all after a crash, our post on when scrap car removal makes sense after an accident covers the first steps.

What do “Salvage” and “Irreparable” mean in Ontario?

When an insurer writes off a car in Ontario, the vehicle record is usually branded. The brand shows up on the vehicle permit and in the Used Vehicle Information Package (UVIP) from ServiceOntario, so future buyers can see it.

Brand What it means Can it go back on the road? Usual next step
Salvage Badly damaged but considered repairable Only after repairs, a Structural Inspection Certificate, and a Safety Standards Certificate; it is then branded “Rebuilt” Rebuild it if the numbers work, or sell or scrap it as is
Irreparable Too damaged to ever be safely repaired No, never in Ontario Parts or scrap only
Rebuilt A former Salvage car that has been repaired and passed inspection Yes, the brand stays on its history Drive it, sell it, or scrap it later like any other car

Rules can change, so check the current requirements with ServiceOntario or the Ministry of Transportation if you plan to rebuild a Salvage car.

Who keeps the car after a total loss?

There are three common situations:

  1. The insurer takes the car. You accept the settlement, sign the vehicle portion of the ownership over to the insurer, and the insurer deals with the wreck. In this case you do not need to arrange scrap car removal yourself.
  2. You keep the car (owner retained). Some insurers let you keep the damaged car, and the settlement is usually reduced by its salvage value. Owners sometimes choose this hoping to fix it cheaply or sell parts, and then find the repairs cost more than expected.
  3. The damage was not covered. If you only had liability coverage and were at fault, or the claim was denied, the damaged car stays yours with no payout.

Ask your adjuster in writing which option applies to you, what happens to the ownership, and whether the car will be branded Salvage or Irreparable.

Should you rebuild a written-off car or scrap it?

Rebuilding can make sense for a Salvage car that is fairly new, has mostly cosmetic or bolt-on damage, and that you plan to keep long-term. Scrapping usually makes more sense when:

  • The car is branded Irreparable
  • The frame, unibody, or airbags are damaged
  • The car was flooded or burned
  • Repair quotes are close to what a comparable used car would cost
  • You would need to pay for a structural inspection and safety certificate on top of repairs
  • A Rebuilt brand would make the car hard to resell or insure later

If the car was water-damaged, see our guide on flooded or water-damaged cars. For mechanical failures rather than collision damage, read repair or scrap options for a blown engine or failed transmission.

What if the car is at a tow yard or body shop?

After a collision, cars often end up at a tow company’s storage yard or a collision centre. Storage fees can add up day by day, so it pays to act quickly.

  • Ask the yard or shop for a written list of any towing, storage, or teardown charges owed.
  • Find out what they need before they will release the car, such as photo ID and the ownership.
  • Tell us the exact pickup location and any release times when you ask for a quote, so pickup can be planned around the yard’s hours.

How does scrap car removal work in Ajax and Toronto for a written-off car?

  1. Get a quote. Call 416-559-3683 or use our online quote form. Tell us the year, make, model, what was damaged, whether it was branded, and where the car is.
  2. Have the ownership ready. You need the vehicle permit in your name and photo ID. If the ownership is missing, read can you scrap a car without the ownership in Ontario first.
  3. Remove plates and personal items. In Ontario, plates stay with you. Our checklist of what to remove before selling your car for cash covers the rest.
  4. Pickup. A written-off car is towed, so it does not need to run or roll easily. See what free towing for a junk car in Toronto covers.

Written-off car checklist

  • ☐ Get the insurer’s decision and settlement terms in writing
  • ☐ Confirm who will own the car after the settlement
  • ☐ Ask whether the car will be branded Salvage or Irreparable
  • ☐ Find the vehicle permit (ownership) and clear any loan or lien
  • ☐ Check for storage or towing charges if the car is at a yard or shop
  • ☐ Remove plates, toll transponders, garage remotes, documents, and personal items
  • ☐ Book pickup and keep your copy of the signed paperwork
  • ☐ Update or cancel insurance only once the car is gone

If there is still a loan on the car, see selling or scrapping a car that has a loan or lien in Ontario. For the full list of plates and insurance steps, read paperwork, plates and insurance before your car leaves.

What affects the offer on a written-off car?

We do not list prices in blog posts, because every quote depends on the actual vehicle. For a damaged car, the main factors are:

  • Year, make, model, and weight
  • Which parts were damaged and which are still intact
  • Whether the engine, transmission, and catalytic converter are still on the car
  • Whether parts have already been removed by a shop or previous owner
  • How easy the car is to reach and load

Be wary of anyone who promises a top price before hearing about the damage. Our list of questions to ask before you accept an offer can help you compare quotes.

What happens to the car after pickup?

Written-off cars that go for recycling in Ontario are handled under end-of-life vehicle rules such as O. Reg. 85/16. Fluids are drained and collected, the battery and other hazardous parts are removed, reusable parts may be recovered, and the remaining metal is recycled. Our guide on how to scrap a car in Ontario explains each step.

Common questions

Do you pick up written-off cars in Ajax?

Yes. Canadian Auto Wreckers picks up damaged and written-off cars in Ajax, Toronto, and across the east GTA, including Pickering, Whitby, Scarborough, Oshawa, and Clarington, as well as Peterborough and Kawartha Lakes.

Can you scrap a car branded Irreparable?

Yes. An Irreparable car cannot be registered for the road again in Ontario, but it can still be sold for parts or recycled. You still need the ownership in your name.

The insurer already took my car. Do I need to do anything?

Usually not. Once you have signed the car over to the insurer, it is their responsibility. Make sure you removed your plates and personal items, and keep a copy of what you signed.

I kept the car to fix it, but repairs cost too much. Is it too late to scrap it?

No. Many owners who keep a Salvage car later decide to scrap it. As long as the ownership is in your name and any lien is cleared, it can be picked up.

The car is stuck at a collision centre in Toronto. Can you pick it up there?

Often, yes. Settle any charges with the shop first, confirm their release hours, and share the address and contact details when you book.
