A collision can turn a dependable car into a problem overnight. Maybe it happened on the 401 near Oshawa, in a parking lot in Clarington, or on a side street in Toronto. Once everyone is safe and the paperwork has started, you are left with a car that may not be worth fixing, sitting in a driveway, a body shop lot, or a storage yard. For many drivers, scrap car removal in Oshawa and across the east GTA becomes the practical next step.
Canadian Auto Wreckers has been buying scrap, junk, and damaged vehicles since 1981. We are based in Toronto, Ontario, Canada, and we arrange pickups across Toronto, Oshawa, Whitby, Ajax, Pickering, Clarington, and beyond. Here is a calm, step-by-step look at what to do with a car after an accident, and when scrapping it makes sense.
Step one: talk to your insurer before you decide anything
If you have filed a claim, your insurance company has a say in what happens next. Before you sell, scrap, or move the vehicle, check a few things with your adjuster:
- Who owns the car now? If the insurer pays out the claim as a total loss, the vehicle may become theirs, not yours. In that case it is not yours to sell.
- Do they need to inspect it? Some insurers want to see the car or have it appraised before anything is removed.
- Can you keep it? Some policies let you keep a written-off vehicle in exchange for a lower payout. If you choose that route, the decision about scrapping is back in your hands.
If there was no claim, for example a single-car accident where you chose not to go through insurance, you generally have more freedom to decide on your own.
Repair, sell privately, or scrap?
Once you know the car is yours to deal with, the choice usually comes down to three options.
Repair it
Repairs make sense when the damage is mostly cosmetic or limited to parts that are easy to replace, and the car is otherwise in good shape. Get a written estimate from a body shop and compare it to what the car was worth before the accident. If the repair bill is close to or above that number, it is worth thinking twice.
Sell it privately as-is
Some buyers look for damaged cars to fix themselves. That can work, but it often means fielding messages, arranging viewings, explaining the damage over and over, and finding a way to move a car that may not be safe to drive. In Ontario, a seriously damaged vehicle may also carry a brand, such as salvage or irreparable, that affects whether and how it can go back on the road. That narrows the pool of buyers.
Scrap it
If the frame, suspension, or airbags are affected, or the car simply is not worth the trouble, scrap car removal is often the quickest way to close the chapter. You get a quote, schedule a pickup, and the car is gone, without listings or test drives. Many parts and materials from scrapped vehicles are recycled, so the car does not just sit and rust.
Signs an accident-damaged car is a good scrap candidate
- The repair estimate is higher than, or close to, the car’s value before the crash.
- There is structural or frame damage, or the airbags have deployed.
- The car is not drivable and would need to be towed anywhere it goes.
- It was already older, high-mileage, or due for expensive work before the accident.
- Storage fees are adding up at a body shop or tow yard.
That last point catches a lot of people off guard. If your car was towed to a storage yard after a collision, daily fees can build quickly. Making a decision sooner rather than later can save you money and stress.
How pickup works for a damaged car
The process is much the same as for any scrap vehicle. You call or request a quote and tell us the year, make, model, and what happened. Be upfront about the damage and whether the car rolls, because that helps us plan the right tow. With an accepted offer, towing is free, and we can usually pick the car up from your driveway, a body shop, or a storage yard, as long as we have permission to access it.
On pickup day, have your ownership ready and signed, take your licence plates off (in Ontario, plates stay with you, not the car), and clear out personal items.
