Selling an old car for cash isn’t complicated, but small slip-ups can make it slower and more frustrating than it needs to be. Most of them come down to the same few things: an unclear description, paperwork that isn’t ready, or forgetting what’s still attached to the car. This guide covers the mistakes we see most often with cash for cars in Toronto and the east GTA, and how to sidestep each one. For how the service works from start to finish, see how cash for cars works in Toronto.

Key takeaways
- Describe the car honestly. The quote is built on your description, and surprises on pickup day are what change it.
- Don’t pull valuable parts off first unless you mention it. The catalytic converter in particular affects value.
- Have the ownership ready and in the right name before you book.
- Take your plates, toll transponder, garage opener and personal items before the tow truck arrives.
- Cancel or transfer your insurance only after the car is gone.

1. Describing the car the way you wish it was
It’s natural to say “it just needs a battery” when you’re not really sure. But the quote is based on what you tell us, so if the driver arrives and finds a seized engine, a cracked frame or a missing transmission, the numbers have to be revisited. That’s frustrating for everyone. Tell us what you know, and say “I’m not sure” when you’re not. Rust, accident damage, flood damage, warning lights and how long it’s been sitting all matter.
2. Pulling parts off before you call
Some people take off the battery, the alloy wheels or the catalytic converter thinking they’ll sell them separately and still get the same quote for the car. The catalytic converter, in particular, is one of the parts that affects a scrap car’s value. If parts are already gone, that’s fine, just mention it so the quote reflects the car as it really is. Our post on catalytic converters and scrap car value explains why. If you’re weighing parting it out against selling it whole, read part it out or sell it whole.
3. Booking before the ownership is sorted
In Ontario, you sign the vehicle portion of the ownership (vehicle permit) over when you sell. If the permit is lost, in a late relative’s name, or in an ex-partner’s name, the pickup can’t go ahead on the day. Sort it out first. A replacement permit comes from ServiceOntario, and our guides on scrapping a car without ownership and Ontario paperwork, plates and insurance cover the details.
4. Forgetting about a loan on the car
If there’s still financing on the vehicle, the lender may have a lien registered against it. That needs to be dealt with before the car can be sold. It’s very common, and it’s not a reason to give up. Just raise it on the first call. See selling a scrap car with a loan or lien in Ontario.
5. Not mentioning how the car is parked
A car in an open driveway is a different job from one boxed in behind another vehicle, sitting on four flat tires in a backyard, or parked three levels down in a condo garage with low clearance. A situation we often see in Toronto is a car stuck in an underground spot where the building has rules about tow trucks. Tell us about gates, laneways, height limits and anything blocking the car so the right truck is sent. Our post on condo, laneway and street pickups in Toronto goes through the common setups.
6. Leaving the licence plates on
In Ontario, the plates belong to you, not the car. Take them off before the driver arrives. You can keep them for your next vehicle or return them at ServiceOntario. A flathead or Phillips screwdriver is usually all you need, and a little penetrating oil helps if the screws are rusted.
7. Leaving personal items behind
Once the car is towed away, getting things back from it isn’t realistic. Check the glovebox, the console, under the seats, the trunk and the spare-tire well. The items people forget most are the 407 ETR transponder, garage door openers, parking passes, sunglasses, child car seats and old paperwork with their address on it. Our what to remove before scrapping a car checklist is worth a quick look.
8. Cancelling the insurance too early
Until the car is signed over and towed away, it’s still yours. Cancelling the policy the night before leaves a gap if anything happens to it on your property or street. Call your insurer once the car has been picked up, and ask them to cancel the policy or move it to another vehicle.
9. Saying yes to an offer you don’t understand
Get the quote clear before you book. Ask whether towing is included, what could change the quote and how you’ll be paid. With us, towing is free and built into the quote, and the quote only changes if the car isn’t as described. If someone shows up and starts pushing a very different number with no clear reason, you’re allowed to say no. Our posts on questions to ask before you accept and avoiding scams when selling your car can help.
What actually affects the value
We don’t publish dollar figures because every car is different. The main factors are the vehicle’s weight and type, its condition, which parts are still on it, whether it runs, and current scrap metal markets. Location and access can also affect how the pickup is planned. An accurate description is the single best way to get a quote that holds.
Frequently asked questions
Do I have to be home when you pick up my car in Toronto?
Someone who can sign the ownership needs to be there for the handover, since the vehicle portion of the permit is signed over at pickup.
Does the car need to run for cash for cars in Toronto?
No. Non-running cars, cars with flat tires and cars with missing parts are all fine, as long as we know about them before pickup.
Is towing extra?
No. Towing is free and included in the quote you accept.
